Children in Years 5 and 6 arrived back from the half term break looking rested and clearly ready to work hard. It has been a super first week back. In Maths, we have been learning about fraction and decimal equivalents, and converting between the two. In English, we have watched the short film, ‘The Astronomer’s Sun’. We worked in pairs to develop a semantic field of words to describe the atmosphere – mysterious, eerie, lonely, ominous, scary, dark, somber, sinister, murky, abandoned, chilling, frightening, melancholy, forgotten – and we will be drawing on these as we write about the bear in the film. We have started our new Science topic of Biodiversity, learning some key vocabulary, thinking of Oxfordshire examples (of eg habitat, species, conservation and endemic) and reading about some of the challenges by human impact on natural habitats. Finally for this post, a huge highlight of the week was our first lacrosse lesson. We all had great fun in the sunshine learning to scoop and pass the ball, having watched some highlights from men’s lacrosse matches in the USA. It seems to be a great game and we look forward to developing our skills in future weeks.
